Family Connections Library Preparing to Launch

Press Release from HACAP Child Care Programs:

On September 7, 2013, the Family Connections Library, located in the new downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library, will hold an opening ceremony to announce the collaboration of 16 public and private agencies working together to form the Family Connections Library. The Family Connection Library is a collaboration of multiple agencies and programs working together to promote early learning and healthy development in young children, by making early childhood support and family stability resources readily available for families and caregivers at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

A “child and family” focused ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m., with Clifford, the Big Red Dog and a traditional library story at 10:30 A.M. Following Story Time, children with their families will have an opportunity to take part in a Treasure Hunt in the new library. Activities are geared for children ages five and under, with older children and adults invited to join in the fun. Please plan to stop by between 10 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on September 7 to meet the community partners and learn about the Family Connections Library!

The Family Connections Library grew out of Priority # 4 of the 15-In-Five initiative, begun in 2005. A lengthy community planning process resulted in the development of this “early childhood hub” within the new library for young children, parents and caregivers. In May, 2013, a grant was secured from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to move the project forward – just in time for the re-opening of the downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library!
